The Matthew Drive Extension
Road Construction Project, which is currently under
construction, involves the construction of a 4-lane major
roadway will run from the current intersection of Matthew
Drive and New Salem Road to an intersection at Route 40 and
Fan Hollow Road, a distance of 4,088 L.F. (0.774 mile).
The intersection of Route 40 and
Fan Hollow Road
will also be an access point for the Mon-Fayette Expressway,
which is currently under construction by the Pennsylvania
Turnpike Commission.
While planning and
preliminary engineering for the project has been taking
place for several years, construction on Matthew Drive
Extension began in 2007. The road is intended to be
operational by November, 2007 and fully complete by
November, 2008.
Funding for the project,
which is anticipated to cost approximately $7.5 million, is
being provided by the
Pennsylvania
Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Pennsylvania
Turnpike Commission, and the Fayette County Redevelopment
Authority. Tremendous support and advocacy for the
project has also been provided by local, state, and federal
officials, including the Fayette County Commissioners and
the South Union Township Supervisors.
